Everyone Has a Story About Them

At a funeral, three or four people speak. Everyone else drives home carrying something they never got to say. Folksee gathers those into one reel — from wherever people are, in their own time.

Why families do this

The Eulogy Is Three People. The Stories Are Hundreds.

A service has room for a handful of voices. But the neighbour, the old colleague, the friend from forty years ago — they all know something about this person that the family has never heard.

The ones who can't be there

Distance, health, cost, notice too short to book a flight. People who would have come and couldn't can still say what they came to say.

The ones who can't say it out loud

Standing at a lectern in front of a grieving family is beyond a lot of people. Alone with a phone, they manage it — and they can start over as many times as they need.

Stories the family never heard

Most of what people know about someone dies with the people who knew them. This is a way to keep some of it while everyone is still here to tell it.

Most People Want to Say Something and Don't Know How

“Share a memory” is a hard thing to answer on the spot. A specific question is easier, and it's what gets people talking about the person rather than about the loss.

Who they were
What's the first thing you picture when you think of them?
What did they always say?
What were they like when nobody else was watching?
Describe them to someone who never met them.
Stories
Tell us about the day you met them.
What's the story your family always tells about them?
When did they make you laugh hardest?
What's something they did for you that they'd have shrugged off?
What they left behind
What did they teach you that you still use?
What do you do differently because of them?
What would you want their grandchildren to know?
For the family
What would you say to their family if you had a minute with them?
What should they be proud of?
What do you want them to know about how their person was seen?
There's no wrong time

Some Families Make One Right Away. Some Wait Years.

Before the service

Played at the funeral or the celebration of life, so the people who couldn't travel are still in the room in some form.

For the family afterwards

Not shown to anyone. Just gathered quietly and given to a widow, or to the children, for whenever they're ready to watch it.

On an anniversary

A year on, ten years on, or the day of a wedding they should have been at. Grief doesn't keep to a schedule and neither does this.

For grandchildren who never met them

One day someone will want to know what their grandfather was actually like. A reel of people who knew him, in their own voices, answers that better than a photograph.

Questions

Things Families Ask Us

We only have a few days before the service. Is that enough?

It can be. Most reels fill up within a few days, and you can keep it open afterwards — people who missed the deadline can still add something, and the reel updates.

Does everyone need to download an app?

No. They tap the link and record in their phone or computer browser. That matters when you're sending it to people of every age and comfort level with technology.

What if someone starts crying and can't finish?

They can stop and re-record as many times as they need. Nobody sees the takes they don't send, and there's no time pressure sitting there watching them.

Who can see it?

Only the people you invite. It's private and isn't listed or searchable anywhere.

Can we make one years after someone has died?

Yes, and people do. An anniversary, a birthday, a wedding they should have been at. The stories don't stop being worth collecting.

Do I have to edit anything?

No. Folksee assembles it for you. You won't be sitting up at night trying to work out video software.

What does it cost?

Your first 5 contributors are free. After that, credits come in packs: 10 for $10, 25 for $22, 50 for $40, or 100 for $75. One credit covers one person, however many messages they record.
